I think it's more of sign that the Republican party (or at least the recent crop of elected officials) has strayed from the conservative stance that should make up the party. They haven't been doing their job and many in the conservative base were tired of being misled. I can't say that they made the correct choice in their lesser-of-two-evils decision, but they did send a message...
