What about Bob?

BOB SCHAEFER is the pastor of First Lutheran Church of Litchville, North Dakota, and Spring Creek Lutheran Church of Hastings, North Dakota.

Bob is a 1998 graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, with a B.A. in religion. He received his Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, in January 2003.

Bob was ordained as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on March 16, 2003, and installed at First and Spring Creek the following Sunday.

Bob has lived most of his life in the Midwest, although he was born on the balmy coast of North Carolina. Growing up in the rural area of Minnesota west of the Twin Cities, he learned to appreciate lakes, thunderstorms and mosquitos. Bob can name too many different kinds of snow on sight, but loves a good Minnesota October night when the sky is clear and the air is crisp.

A “cradle Lutheran,” Bob is nevertheless convinced that he would have chosen the Lutheran faith if it hadn’t chosen him first. As a young member of Faith Lutheran Church, Bob participated in everything from bell choir to the synod and national youth boards. He has fond memories of his home congregation (especially that youth director whose office he and his friends “ballooned”), and enjoys visiting when he’s in town.

Bob survived the Great Frozen Tundra for four years while attending Concordia College, and wears his Cobber ring with pride. ‘Nuff said.

In his academic career, Bob was honored to be named a National Merit Scholar, to receive the Concordia Faculty and Music Scholarships, and to be the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship at Luther Seminary.

As an intern, Bob discovered the beauty of northwestern Washington. He immediately fell in love with the people and the place, saying, “Minnesota may be God’s country, but I’m starting to think this is where he takes his vacations.” He fervently hopes to find his way back to Washington someday.

Bob is a musician several times over, and has performed with the nationally recognized handbell ensemble Twin Cities Bronze. He can be heard playing an unusual combination of handbells and Coke bottles on their CD, “Holidays in Bronze”.

Since moving to North Dakota, Bob has developed an appreciation for the small town life and for the terse beauty of the prairie.

Bob has been blessed with a wonderful and supportive family: Parents Jim and Jan, brother Jeff, and canine members Ellie and Molly. Although his extended family is small (they all fit comfortably at the dining room table on major holidays), he is grateful for how close they are.

When he has spare time, Bob enjoys photography, reading, making and listening to music, watching films, and putting down a good beer with his friends. He stinks at video games, but is a three-computer family... all by himself. Living in a house of his own for the first time, Bob is living out his worst nightmare: slowly turning into Martha Stewart (pre-conviction), one nifty idea at a time.
