In Memory of Nikki

Nikki was my first dog. She and I met during the first weeks of my internship in Washington, when I realized that it might get pretty lonely around the new house without someone to keep me company. I began my search for a perfect pet and within days, I came home from the shelter with Nikki. She would be my friend and companion for the next three years. On Thanksgiving Day, 2003, a lump appeared on Nikki’s head; less than a month later, the cancer took her.

Nikki was famous (infamous?) for many things. She was one of the most tolerant dogs my family had ever met. From the very first day we knew her, she was comfortable being handled, picked up, and even cradled like a baby. Her good natured approach to life made her an ideal intern pastor’s dog, and continued to serve her well when she and I moved into the parsonage together two years later.

Those who knew Nikki will never forget her bouncing. Despite her advanced age (the vet’s best guess was somewhere around ten or twelve years old), Nikki was a true athlete, and the high jump was her sport. Or rather, it would be if the point of the high jump were to continue jumping as high as possible for as long as you’ve got any energy left in you! It wasn’t enough for Nikki to show her excitement by jumping up in the air once... she bounced as though she were spring-loaded.

Nikki was a special part of my life, and the life of my family. Her energy and enthusiasm for all things bounce-worthy are missed very much.

You can visit the shelter that saved Nikki at www.saveourdogs.com. Please consider making a donation in Nikki’s memory, so that other lonely dogs might find good homes like Nikki did.
