The Moon

Our friendship is like the moon,
Shining down full and bright and beautiful
for all the world to see,
Then disappearing in time,
   leaving only a tiny sliver,
a dim reminder of its past glory.
But standing in this new darkness,
I realize that nothing has been taken from me.
   Our moon is still there.
I see that God is only hiding it from me
so that I am not blinded
by the sight of its beauty.
And I know that in time
the full moon will rise once more,
and its light will fill our hearts again.
And the world will be brighter for awhile.

About this piece

This poem dates back to 1992, and was composed in honor of a close friend of mine, during a time when our friendship was struggling.
